Violins family are violin, viola, cello and double bass. violin is the smallest and highest-tuned member of the violins family. The violin, with the highest voice of the four, is the soprano of the family. The viola is the alto, the cello is a combination tenor-baritone-bass, and the double bass is the basso profondo, the “deep bass”. All four instruments are played with a bow, but they can be plucked as well.

The viola is a bigger instrument than the violin (anywhere from one to three inches longer), but like the violin it's played under the chin, held up with the left hand. It has four strings tuned in fifths (C G D A).

The cello is always played sitting down, the instrument held between the legs and supported by a sharpened endpin that sticks in the floor. Its four strings are tuned an octave lower than the viola.

The double bass is so large that the player must either stand or lean against a high stool. It is the largest and the lowest-pitched of the stringed instruments. it measures between 1.60 m and 2 m and has four strings tuned in fifths (E A D G).

The other violins family members share the basic features of the violin: four strings, a hollow wooden body, which acts as an amplifier for the vibrations of the strings, and a long, narrow neck with a fingerboard (not fretted) glued to it.

Pictures below respectively show you the other members of violins family : viola, cello, double bass.
